Tips for a High Score

The Dinosaur Game looks simple, but the difference between 300 and 3,000 points is technique. These tips are based on how the game actually works.

10 tips that really help

  1. 01

Look ahead, not at the dinosaur

Keep your eyes on the right half of the screen. The dinosaur always stays in the same place; what matters is what is coming.

  2. 02

Control the height of your jump

A short tap gives a low jump, holding Space or the up arrow gives a high one. Use short jumps for single small cacti so you land sooner.

  3. 03

    Drop down quickly

Press the down arrow in the air and the dinosaur falls much faster. This is the most useful trick at high speed, when a long jump would land you on the next cactus.

  4. 04

Jump earlier as the game speeds up

The speed keeps growing, so you need to jump while the cactus is still further away. If you hit a cactus on the way up, you jumped too late; if you land on it, you jumped too early.

  5. 05

    Read the pterodactyl's height

Low ones: jump. Middle ones: duck or jump high. High ones: do nothing and run under them. Panic jumps into a high pterodactyl are a classic way to lose.

  6. 06

    Duck early and keep holding

Press and hold the down arrow before the pterodactyl arrives and release it once it has passed. Ducking at the last moment often comes too late.

  7. 07

    Do not panic at night

At 700 points and then every 700 points the colours invert for about 12 seconds. Nothing else changes: same speed, same obstacles. Keep your rhythm.

  8. 08

    Use the keyboard

On a computer the keyboard reacts faster and more precisely than a mouse or touchpad. Keep one finger on Space or the up arrow and one on the down arrow.

  9. 09

    Make the game bigger

A larger picture gives you more time to react. Zoom the page in, or play in full screen with F11.

  10. 10

    Warm up

The first runs of a session are usually the worst. Play a few warm-up rounds before you try to beat your record.

What happens at each score

The game gets harder in clear stages. Knowing them helps you get ready before the change comes.

ScoreWhat changes
0Starting speed. For the first three seconds there are no obstacles.
Every 100The score blinks and you hear a short beep.
~450Pterodactyls start to appear.
700First night mode, for about 12 seconds.
1,400, 2,100…Night mode returns every 700 points.
~1,650Top speed is reached. After this the game does not get any faster.

The scores for pterodactyls and top speed are approximate: they depend on the speed, not on the score, and can differ slightly between devices.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the jump for every obstacle. Long jumps are slow, and at high speed you land right on the next cactus.
  • Jumping at high pterodactyls. You fly straight into them; just keep running.
  • Reacting to the dinosaur instead of the obstacles. Look ahead.
  • Changing rhythm in night mode. It is only a colour change.
  • Playing in a tiny window. The smaller the game, the less time you have.

Questions about high scores

What is a good score in the Dinosaur Game?

For most players 500 to 1,000 points is a solid result. Above 2,000, when the game is at full speed, you are playing at a very good level.

Can you duck in the air?

Not exactly, but pressing the down arrow during a jump makes the dinosaur fall to the ground very quickly. Once it lands, hold the arrow to duck.

Does the game get faster forever?

No. The speed stops growing at around 1,650 points. After that only the mix of obstacles changes.

Why did the screen turn black?

That is night mode. It turns on every 700 points and switches back after about 12 seconds.

Ready to run?

The T-Rex is waiting. Press Space and see how far you can get before the first cactus.
