About the Dinosaur Game
A tiny pixel T-Rex, a desert and endless cacti: the game that turned the «No internet» page into one of the most played games in the world. Here is where it came from.
Play Dino GameWhat is the Dinosaur Game?
The Dinosaur Game, also called the Chrome Dino, T-Rex Game or Dino Runner, is an endless runner built into the Google Chrome browser. When Chrome cannot load a page because there is no internet connection, it shows a small grey dinosaur. Press Space and the dinosaur starts running.
The rules fit in one sentence: jump over cacti, duck under pterodactyls and run as far as you can. The game never ends on its own; it only gets faster. Your score grows with the distance you cover, and the best result is shown as HI next to the current score.
On dinosaur.game you can play the same game online in any browser, on a computer, phone or tablet, without disconnecting from the internet. Just open the game page and press Space.
A short history
- 2014
Made by the Chrome UX team
The game was created by Chrome designers and engineers Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes and Edward Jung. The dinosaur was already the mascot of the «No internet» page, and the team decided to give it something to do.
- 2014
Project Bolan
Inside Google the game had the code name Project Bolan, a nod to Marc Bolan, the singer of the 1970s rock band T. Rex.
- 2014
Release in Chrome
The dinosaur learned to run in Chrome in September 2014. Soon after, the game was adapted for phones and tablets, where you play by tapping the screen.
- 2018
270 million games a month
For Chrome's tenth birthday Google said the game was played about 270 million times a month. To celebrate, the dinosaur got a birthday cake and a party hat for a while.
- Today
Still in every Chrome
The game is still built into Chrome. You can open it at any time by typing chrome://dino in the address bar, or play it online here on dinosaur.game.
The game in numbers
Why a dinosaur?
The idea is a joke about being offline. Without the internet you are thrown back to «prehistoric times», so the hero of the offline page is a creature from the age of dinosaurs. The T-Rex with its tiny arms also makes a funny runner: it cannot hold on to anything, it can only jump.
The pixel style is not an accident either. The game is drawn in the same grey, minimal style as the «No internet» page, so it feels like a part of the browser rather than a separate app. That is also why the game is monochrome, and why night mode is simply an inverted picture.
Obstacles you will meet
- Small cacti. They appear from the very beginning, alone or in groups of up to three.
- Large cacti. Taller and wider. At higher speed they also come in groups, which needs an early, long jump.
- Low pterodactyl. Flies just above the ground. Jump over it like a cactus.
- Middle pterodactyl. Flies at head height. Duck under it or time a high jump.
- High pterodactyl. Flies above the dinosaur. Do nothing and simply run under it.
- The same obstacle never appears more than two times in a row, so the pattern always changes.
